Tips for making a good singing demo

What is a demo for?

To show you in your best light, the whole variety of your voice and talent

Why can't I just audition?

Music producers are incredibly busy and meet clients at all hours. They want to be able to send your demo to the director of the CM or movie and tell them confidently that THIS is the singer to do a great job. Auditions never happen for recording jobs -- you get work based on your demo, which is why it is crucial you make the best one you can afford.

How many songs should I send?

Four or five unless you can sing in multiple languages -- then send more.
You don't need to send a whole song- it's better if we have 5 one-minute tracks we can mix and showcase your variety than one show-stopper.
Our clients are way too busy to listen to a 3-minute song -- we will choose 30 seconds from your track to mix a 2 minute demo

What type of songs are best?

Studio sessions often involve singing harmonies on the spot. Our clients like to hear how well you can do harmonies and lay multiple tracks down -- please include a harmony track if possible.
Anyone can do a ballad (and don't we singers love to belt one out!), but most TVCM tracks require fast, boppy pop-rock so please include something like that.

Give us some variety of styles

  • What makes a successful session singer?
  • Can you sound like a lot of different singers?
  • Do you have great pitch? Do you love to sing, and feel comfortable listening to feedback and taking direction?
  • Are you easygoing, friendly, confident?
  • Do you look well dressed, hip and happening when you come to the studio?

If you can answer yes to the above then there’s a very good chance you will be successful.

Variety is very important.

If you only have one sound – Italian opera, for example – that’s fine, but you will only ever be in line for jobs that call for an Italian opera singer. But if you do have a variety of styles, make sure your best ones are all represented on your demo. The only way our clients make a decision about which singer to use is by listening to demos. When they find the voice and style they need, that’s the person they’re going to choose.

How will Dagmusic get me work?

For us to pitch you successfully to our clients, it’s not enough to be an amazing singer. Whenever we find great singers, we’ll directly contact our best clients to let them know there is a hot new talent in town. So you win, our clients win, and we win. But if we receive a poor-resolution photo, a messy bio or an unprofessional sounding demo (not a rare occurrence, unfortunately), our chances of getting you high-level work are considerably reduced. If you’re a top-notch artist, make sure all your materials are top-notch too.

Dagmusic common questions –

Q. Can we sponsor visas?
A. No, There have been two rare cases though.  These were artists already living in Japan and working in the industry.  They had up to date income AND residential tax records and provided a detailed presentation to immigration of their past career and how valuable they could be working in Japan.
We've also had 2 rejections for applications we submitted for artists who didn't have good data or presentations which makes us very wary of going to the trouble when everything is not perfect.  One thing to consider is self sponsor- if you have all your income, tax and residential data, can prove that your multiple sources of income can support you and that you're a good all round citizen, you can sponsor yourself quite easily.

Q. Do we promote artists?
A. Only in an Ezine to our clients which we send out monthly.  We submit your data to them for specific jobs. We do not cover any other promotional work on behalf of the artist.

Q. Why do I get no jobs?
A. Clients choose the artist, this is not Dagmusic’s responsibility. If you are not chosen then there is nothing Dagmusic can do.

Q. Can I make an appointment/audition with Dagmusic?
A. No, our office is run on minimal staff, therefore we ask all applications by email.

Q. When do I get paid?
A. Usually 3 months after the job, on the 15th. We will be making a PDF to cover this section shortly.

A. What happens after I send my application?
Q. Dagmusic will send you a return email and answer any questions you have.

Q. Can I call the office to check on current jobs?
A. No, Clients choose the artist, and we have no part in the selection process. If there is a job that you are chosen for we will contact you accordingly.

Q. What kind of photo should I send?
A. Please refer to the guidelines above “when submitting an application form”.

Q. What kind of Demo should I send?
A. Please refer to the guidelines above “when submitting an application form”. Please also refer to demos by other artist on our website.

Q. How long a bio should I send?
A. Please refer to the guidelines above “when submitting an application form”.

Kids common questions

Q. How old does my child have to be?
A. Depends on the job, but being able to read would be an advantage.

Q. Will the jobs interfere with our child’s education?
A. They depend on the client, however most children’s jobs take this in to account.

Q. Does my child have to be able to sing well?
A. Being able to carry a tune will be good, since many of our job inquiries are for singing. However, our clients may be just looking for a specific voice to do a narration or just reciting a product name.

Q. How can my child register for Dagmusic?
A. Your child will need to make a vocal demo with us so our clients have a sample of his/her voice. Please call the Dagmusic office at 03-3423-9665 to make an appointment to make a demo.

Q. Can I come to register by myself?
A. Unless you are over 18, We need to have written permission from your parents. We also need to talk to your parents directly over phone before you come.
